Welcome to George and Emmadale's, a charming antique and novelty store,
auction gallery (the desert offices/gallery of Julien’s Auctions) and coming in 2025
a gourmet coffee shop nestled in the heart of Palm Springs, California.
This unique establishment is not just a place to savor the finest coffee blends
and peruse vintage treasures; it's also a testament to the rich history
of a beloved couple who began their journey of life together
in the fertile farming community of Edon, Williams County, Ohio.
He of French lineage and she of proud Irish descent.
In the late 1950’s, George and Emmadale, moved to Sturgis, Michigan, a
community close to the heart of Amish country just across the Indiana state
line. They led a simple life of tradition and routine and there was an
important life lesson around every corner. With children and grandchildren
living nearby, the bond formed with their seven "grands",was especially close.
For them, it was a frequent and exciting treat to spend days and nights at
Grandpa and Grandma’s house. Mornings were filled with anticipation of
the day ahead. The familiar smell of toast and coffee greeted the day….
Adventures included “garage sale-ing” with Grandma, who each week
intently mapped out sale locations listed in the local paper. She knew the
places where she might find a great bargain; something either for useful
utilitarian purpose, or a valuable antique cast-off.
George would visit the local “dump” and find discarded toys and other items
that he lovingly restored, much to the delight of the grandchildren who
already thought Grandpa and Grandma hung the moon. He and Emmadale
were expert “re-purposers”. George loved to work with wood, from the
selection of the tree to the finished piece of furniture. He admired the
different grains produced by each tree variety. His woodworking gifts are still
treasured possessions because of the love and care shaped into each piece.
Emmadale, along with George, was a “master gardener”, without the official
title. Together they grew almost all their own produce in their large garden.
Rarely was there a time when visiting their home did not include partaking
in the fruit of their labors at the table. Emmadale would include her
grandchildren in the “putting up” of canned goods and preparing the harvest
for meals, and the time spent included rich conversation and stories of
Grandpa and Grandma’s life and family.
George also raised honey bees in hives along a hedge beside the garden, which
was a great benefit for the garden as well as for those who received the honey!
Honey was given to friends and family with the remainder sold at the local
farmer’s market, a place he loved to attend, not only to sell home-grown
goods but to fellowship with the people of the community.
George and Emmadale found great contentment and purpose in life by
selflessly sharing both their foundation of faith and whatever earthly
goods they had been given. To say they were greatly loved
would be an understatement.
As you step inside George & Emmadale's, a warm and inviting space is found
where you'll be greeted by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of
carefully curated antiques. The coffee shop boasts a menu of favorite blends,
(which George would have taken great delight in), expertly crafted by skilled
baristas. Each antique on display holds a story, waiting to be discovered by
visitors who appreciate the beauty of the past.
The legacy of George & Emmadale lives on at this esteemed establishment.
